About Radiology Strategy & Performance
Radiology Strategy & Performance Ltd provides specialist consultancy and advisory support to NHS organisations, healthcare providers and industry partners working within diagnostic imaging.
Our approach is grounded in first-hand experience of managing complex radiology services. We understand the pressures facing imaging teams - increasing demand, constrained capacity, workforce challenges, financial pressures, ageing equipment, operational inefficiencies and the continuing need to improve patient access and service performance.
We work with organisations to understand what is happening within their services, identify where capacity or performance is being lost and develop practical, evidence-based opportunities for improvement.
Our work can include demand and capacity analysis, operational performance review, pathway and workflow improvement, service redesign, business planning, equipment strategy, procurement insight and support for organisations developing products or services for the NHS radiology market.
The focus is straightforward: practical recommendations that reflect how radiology services actually operate.

James Knowles
James founded Radiology Strategy & Performance following a career of more than 25 years within NHS diagnostic imaging, progressing from a clinical Radiographer and Advanced Practice Reporting Radiographer into senior operational and strategic leadership.
Most recently, James spent 4 years as the Radiology Directorate Manager of Bournemouth and Christchurch Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and then a further five years as Head of Imaging Services at University Hospitals Dorset, with responsibility for one of the largest acute and community diagnostic imaging services in the region. His role covered operational performance, workforce, finance, demand and capacity, service development, governance and long-term imaging strategy.
During his NHS career, James led and supported major developments including Community Diagnostic Centres, a purpose-built emergency radiology unit and significant multi-million-pound imaging equipment replacement and capital programmes.
He has extensive experience developing business cases, reviewing demand and capacity, improving patient pathways and productivity, managing complex budgets and working with clinical teams, executive leaders, finance, estates, procurement, architects and external suppliers.
James also brings considerable experience from the customer side of the healthcare industry. Having been involved in equipment procurement, supplier negotiations, service contracts and investment decisions, he understands both what NHS radiology teams need from commercial partners and how purchasing and investment decisions are made within healthcare organisations.
This combination of clinical understanding, operational leadership and commercial insight allows Radiology Strategy & Performance to look beyond headline performance figures and understand the practical reasons behind them.
Whether supporting an NHS organisation to improve its imaging service or helping an industry partner better understand its NHS customers, the aim is the same: to turn radiology experience, data and insight into practical action.
